Sarathy(Vijay) is the perfect human being - a youth who shines in every facet of life. But the same astrologer who predicted his perfection has also predicted that his life will end when he is 27. Ignorant of this fact, Sarathy lives his life enjoying every moment of it. Suji(Meera Jasmine) is his close friend while Jo(Amisha Patel), a photojournalist from Kerala, woos him. A land deal gone bad brings Sarathy face to face with Reddiar('Kalabhavan' Mani).
Perfect heroes are boring. Protagonists need to have shades of gray to be interesting (it is probably this realisation that has led to the slew of movies where the hero is a rowdy and even the police is not exempt to this as seen recently in Saamy). So Vijay's perfection leads to a rather boring first half in Pudhiya Geethai. As he goes about helping people, charming everyone and being the ideal man, things get a little too monotonous. Murari managed to work up some suspense with Mahesh's close calls since he was constantly under danger. But since we know that Vijay is under no danger until he is 27, the majority of the movie progresses with nothing whatsoever to get us involved.
'Kalabhavan' Mani's arrival makes things better since it atleast gives the movie some focus without meandering around aimlessly, showing off Vijay's goodness. Vijay's personal clashes with him are a little interesting though the majority is still Vijay beating up his goondas. But the movie really picks up speed only as the climax nears. Inspite of Vijay's image standing in the way, there is a little suspense about his fate. But the director takes the easy way out at the end.
The presence of two heroines does nothing to improve the quality of the romance. Both the characterization of the female leads and the lame nature of the romance itself have something to do with this. Amisha's teasing of Meera with her obvious wooing of Vijay is more interesting than the wooing itself. Meera Jasmine's character seems mentally retarded most of the time though she transforms overnight into a mature woman two-thirds into the movie. Like the movie's climax, the way the love triangle has been resolved is again lame.
Vijay underplays as usual but is convincing during his angry outbursts(as with the friend who attempts to commit suicide after a love failure). Meera Jasmine overacts though the way her character has been shaped doesnt help. Amisha Patel is adequate. 'Kalabhavan' Mani makes a convincing villain(on a side note, here's a Malayali actor playing a Telugu character in Tamil movie!) while Karunas struggles to make us laugh. Yuvan Shankar Raja delivers a rather weak soundtrack.
