When Kottaiperumal('Kalabhavan' Mani), the Minister of Tourism and one of the contenders for the post of Chief Minister of TamilNadu, is kidnapped, a commando unit is dispatched to rescue him. After the successful mission, Bose(Srikanth), the leader of the unit, is put in charge of security for Kottaiperumal. But when Bose finds the politician attempting to molest a college student Charulatha(Sneha), he shoots him and helps her escape. Bose is courtmartialed as a result and dismissed from the army but Kottaiperumal is not willing to let him get away that easy.
Similar to other movies that pitted a common man against someone more powerful than him, Bose follows the same story arc of the man in power gunning for the hero, the hero outwitting him through a mix of brain and brawn, the hero being targetted through his family but eventually gaining his revenge. Though firstime director Senthilkumar doesn't stray from this track, the ingredients he throws in result in an entertaining and enjoyable movie.
The action sequences in Bose stand out from the ho-hum fight sequences in recent movies. Though graphics have been employed rather obviously in many places, the sequences have been mounted well. The first rescue mission provides an explosive start and though subsequent fight sequences(like the fight in the theater) are on a smaller scale, they are also choreographed well and thrillingly. But there are also some places where potential fights are avoided. The large number of villains allows srikanth the liberty of simply shooting down many of them instead of letting them go after a fight, only to see them return and harass him and his family. This contributes to the fast pace of the film.
I can't remember another movie where I laughed so hard at the behavior and words of the villain and his cohorts. Without resorting to straightforward comedy, which would have reduced the effectiveness of his villainy, 'Kalabhavan' Mani manages to make us laugh. His frustration and anger at the location where he was shot is brought out in a very funny way and the actors around him contribute to the humor with some well-timed shots too. The director also shows creativity and humour in other situations(like Sneha's meetings with one the of rowdies) which are usually not dealt with in a humorous fashion.
The romance manages to be a little different also. Though Sneha behaves like all heroines, pursuing Srikanth vigorously, Srikanth's serious attitude lends some difference to their relationship. There is nothing new in Srikanth's family though. It is the typical 'Vikraman family' where everyone is good but eventually have little impact on the story!
srikanth makes a convincing action hero and his indulging in many action sequences without stunt doubles contributes to this. Sneha looks a little aged and tired even compared to her last release Vasoolraja MBBS. She starts off imitating Jyothika but thankfully, not for much longer. Her puppet-like edance steps for Bommalaattam... are a delight. 'Kalabhavan' Mani strikes a fine balance between villainy and comedy.
