Tamil films can usually be easily slotted into genres but T4 avoids this. It starts off looking like it is going to be a typical romantic comedy between a mismatched couple, then it shows signs of becoming a comedy about unprepared parents and then turns into a thriller. But the transitions between these sections feel natural and the screenplay is smooth even as it takes us in some unexpected directions. These turns spike our interest level at regular intervals and keep us consistently engaged as the story unfolds.
The main reason for the film proceeding smoothly through all these different genres is that they are all treated in the same light-hearted vein. Whatever the issue being tackled, whether its Ajmal bungling up his presentation, Ajmal and Rupa struggling with the baby or the two of them getting trapped inside a house, the tone with which it is dealt with is always light. There are sentiments, suspense and thrills but they delivered with a dash of humor. There are several clever moments(like the way Rupa uses a random pregnant woman while lying to her mom on the phone) and funny one-liners scattered around and the film keeps us smiling throughout.
Ofcourse the light-hearted take on everything also means that the film never develops any dramatic tension. While this doesn't matter initially as the situations lend themselves to comedy, the lack of seriousness prevents any drama even when the movie enters thriller territory. So it treads the middle line, being neither a full-fledged comedy nor an effective thriller.
While T4 doesn't seem like a romantic comedy, it does feature a nice romance between Ajman and Rupa. Unlike other romances where one look or a few conversations are all that is needed for the boy and girl to fall in love, the story here allows the two to spend a lot of time together. While they start off with very different attitudes towards life, it is nice to see them interact and learn from each other and so it is very believable when they develop feelings for each other.
Ajmal, after a couple of serious roles, gets to have fun here. He isn't totally expressive or uninhibited but shows good comic timing. Rupa Manjari is excellent and shows perfect understanding of her role and the kind of film she is in. She brings the perfect blend of light-heartedness and seriousness and does so very casually. Mouli as always gets many good laughs with his deadpan dialog delivery and is completely convincing in the few scenes where he gets emotional too.
