2004 - THE BOTTOM TEN

Here, in reverse order (best of the worst to worst of the worst) are the 10 least watchable tamil films of 2002.

10 Udhaya
This film reached theaters after a long journey but the unavoidable aging wasn't the only problem. The movie's take on science seemed to be targeted at five year olds as Vijay generated a nuclear explosion in his lab and was excited about finding a source of future power. The movie took a sudden turn from romance to action with the introduction of a revolutionary group and the ending was lame. Vijay must have been glad Gilli came by soon after to erase this movie from people's minds!

9 Neranja Manasu
It was director Samuthirakani who lost out to Vijayakanth's image in this alliance of the director(whose first film Unnai Saranadainthen had a strong story) and Vijayakanth. In another predictable and cliched movie where Vijayakanth plays the village savior, the hero went around in clean clothes and flashy vehicles while the villagers remained poor for most of the movie. Praise for Vijayakanth reached intolerable levels towards the end. Neraiyaadha Padam!

8 Kangalaal Kaidhu Sei
If this were a list of the most disappointing films of the year instead of the worst, this thriller from Bharatiraja would have been at the top of the list. Considering the director's experience in movies in general and the thriller genre in particular, the movie was shockingly amateurish with several unintentionally funny scenes. The woodenness of the debutante hero did not help matters. The movie picked up towards the end but it was too little too late. Kangalai Moodi Vai!

7 Image
Illogical happenings, like students at an art school practising inside a cave and travelling to a forest to paint a nature scene, abounded in this thriller. Idiotic criminals, bumbling policemen and a private detective played by a non-actor completed the depressing picture and even the admittedly surprising twist near the end was handled ineffectively.

6 Sound Party
A single plot point of Satyaraj thinking that Pratyusha is in love with him after he helps her complete higher studies, was stretched to ridiculous lengths here. The little interest in the movie wanes once we realise that the movies does not have any other plot points in mind and a sequence where Satyaraj and his friends think Dhamu is a competitor for her affections and try to drive him out was the limit. Noisy!

5 Singaara Chennai
An irritating, unfunny and unconnected comedy track was inexplicably given the upper hand in this movie. The stupid acts of the lead pair and a loud 'Kalabhavan' Mani made the main track difficult to sit through but the comedy track made one wish the movie would switch back to them. The twists near the end only made one realise that the movie could have been a lot better and wonder why the director had to rely on the comedy track. Bayangara Chennai!

4 Ennavo Pudichirukku
This movie was more proof that two movies with similar themes could be poles apart in quality. The movie had Vaali's theme of a brother sabotaging his brother's romance but without either the cuteness in the romance or the thrills in the brother's machinations. The romance between the lead pair was inane and Karunas' comedy track, a spoof of Pithaamagan was another low in the comedian's increasingly irritating tracks. Onnume Pudikkalai!

3 Jai
Movies that tackle college life almost always find a spot on the bottom 10-list and Jai does not disappoint. But the movie does a lot more than simply portray an unrealistic college atmosphere. The irritating hype for Prashanth's heroics, needless violence, vulgar song picturization and an over-top-villain (who actually bit people!), this was a bad movie even by Prashanth's standards (remember, he also made Chocklet and Star!)

2 Indru
Keeping up the tradition of movies like Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuven, this movie made a mockery of the army and its soldiers as they broke into song and dance and were unaware of basic computer terminology like password usage! Coupled with a lacklustre murder investigation and an uninvolving romance, the movie was a chore to sit through.

1 Anbe Un Vasam
Unbelievable characters acting in impractical ways in cinematic situations was what this movie was all about! Scenes like the picturization of the tennis match and the lead pair's friends putting up posters on the couple's romance were laughably silly and an odd walk was the most noticeable thing about the hero! Potential for suspense was destroyed by ending a possible
